Essex’s premier winter attraction is set to illuminate the dark colder nights once again, as organisers confirm the return of Enlightened Chelmsford to the historic grounds of Hylands Estate for winter 2026.
The wildly popular outdoor light trail, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors across Essex and beyond each festive season, will bring brand-new interactive installations, immersive soundscapes, and breathtaking light displays to the landscaped parkland.
A Dazzling Winter Tradition at Hylands Estate
Set against the elegant backdrop of the Grade II* listed neo-classical Hylands House, Enlightened transforms the ancient woodlands and landscaped gardens into an enchanting wonderland. The trail spans approximately 1.4 kilometres, offering visitors an atmospheric, self-guided stroll beneath ancient oak trees wrapped in fairy lights, across illuminated bridges, and through vibrant tunnels of light.
For 2026, the creative team behind Enlightened Moments has promised an upgraded route featuring innovative digital projection mapping, mesmerising laser technology, and interactive features designed to delight visitors of all ages.
What to Expect on the 2026 Trail
Visitors can look forward to a mix of returning fan favourites alongside several unannounced premier installations:
- The Enchanted Woodland: Towering native trees illuminated in jewel tones, synchronised with an ambient, bespoke musical score.
- Interactive Light Zones: Step-on pads, kinetic light wands, and playful installations designed specifically for younger children and families.
- The Grand Finale at Hylands House: A dynamic light projection and music show transforming the front façade of the historic mansion.
- Reflective Water Displays: Stunning lighting designs across the pleasure gardens and ornamental pond features.
Food, Drinks, and Festive Merriment
No winter evening walk is complete without seasonal refreshments. The catering village at the start and end of the trail will host an expanded line-up of local Essex street food vendors, artisan confectioners, and warm drink stalls.
